How do you restore headlight covers?

Picture this: You're driving super late at night on this skinny road, with trees crowding in on both sides. Suddenly, boom! A deer jumps out in front of your car. You slam on the brakes or swerve like crazy to avoid it. Scary, right? Well, guess what? Cloudy headlights could be to blame for situations like this. So, how do you fix 'em up?

So, why do headlights get all foggy? Well, back in the 1980s, car makers started using plastic instead of glass for headlights. Plastic doesn't break as easily, but it's more likely to get foggy.

One big reason for foggy headlights is oxidation. That's when the plastic gets old and cloudy from being out in the sun. Plus, all the stuff that hits your headlights while you're driving, like bugs and dirt, can make it worse.

But wait, there's more! UV light, road grime, salt, and other junk can also mess up your headlights, making them all hazy. And when your headlights aren't clear, it's harder to see at night, which is definitely not good for driving safely.

Alright, now that we know why headlights get foggy, let's talk about how to clean 'em up!

Method 1: Toothpaste or Baking Soda

You'll need:

- Gloves

- Water bucket

- Paint or masking tape

- Microfiber cloths

- Toothpaste or baking soda (not gel)

- No dish soap!

First, clean your headlights with soapy water and dry 'em off. Then, tape around the headlights to protect the frame. Rub some toothpaste or baking soda on the headlights with a wet cloth, in small circles, for about 5 minutes each. Rinse and dry, and repeat if needed.

Method 2: Glass Cleaner and Polish

You'll need:

- Automotive glass cleaner (no ammonia)

- Paint or masking tape

- Cutting polish or automotive rubbing compound

- Gloves

- Rotary or electric buffer

- Microfiber cloths

- Water bucket

Start by taping off the headlights, then spray 'em with glass cleaner. Wipe it off, and then use polish to buff 'em up. Rinse and dry, and do it again if needed.

Method 3: Sandpaper and Polish

You'll need:

- DIY kit or sandpaper (600 to 3000 grit)

- Cutting or polishing compound

- Gloves

- Spray bottle

- Microfiber cloths

- Masking tape

First, clean your headlights real good. Then, wet sand 'em with different grades of sandpaper, going side to side and up and down. After that, polish 'em up real nice.

Now, if all this seems like too much work, you can always get a pro to do it for you. We can even put a special coating on your headlights to keep 'em lookin good for longer!
